New Delhi:

A 55-year-old woman was dragged by snatchers riding a bike on Rohtak Road near Madipur Metro Station early on Friday. The criminals tried to push her off as she held onto her bag. They finally sped away after passersby started gathering at the spot. The woman managed to retain her bag, but suffered severe injuries on her arms and neck.

The incident occurred around 4.30am while the victim, Urmilla Bhambri, was waiting for an autorickshaw to go to Jhandewalan temple.

“Three men riding a black bike on the wrong side stopped a few feet ahead of me. They then stated reversing the bike. Suddenly, the pillion rider tugged at my bag while the one riding the bike started revving it,” the victim added.

Bhambri instinctively grabbed the handle of the handbag and fell on the road while trying to stop the biker from snatching it. She was dragged for 10-15 metres before the snatchers stopped and tried to push her away.

Hearing her cries for help, a few passerbys and a motorcycle rider stopped after which the snatchers sped away, said the victim’s son, Sahil, a journalist with a private television channel.

The passersby helped Bhambri up and informed her family. She was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries on her arms and neck.

“It is her daily routine to go to the temple after completing her morning chores. We suspect that the criminals might have been observing her for some time. She usually carries a bit of money in her bag,” Sahil said.

A case of voluntarily causing hurt to commit robbery has been registered at Punjabi Bagh police station. CCTV footage from the area is being scanned to identify the snatchers. Bhambri said the youths on the bike looked like teenagers and were not wearing helmets.

The victim said that the criminals fled towards Paschim Vihar on the bike, which did not have a numberplate. “There is usually a police picket on the stretch, but it seems that the criminals managed to evade it and escape,” Bhambri said.
