Former chief minister Sheila Dikshit may have to soon fly to France for heart surgery. Sources said the three-time Delhi CM from Congress has been unwell for some time and doctors have advised surgery at the earliest.
In her letter to Delhi government’s director general of health services (DGHS), Dikshit said that doctor Ashok Seth, chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, has advised that the procedure be performed at University Hospital in Lille, France under the care of Dr Thomas Modine. She has also enclosed the letters from both Dr Seth as well as the French hospital.
“Keeping the urgency of the procedure in mind, I propose to leave for France on August 12. The proposed date of surgery is August 14,” the letter added.
Sources said Dikshit has been undergoing treatment at Fortis Escorts hospital under the supervision of Dr Seth for the past few years. She had undergone angioplasty in November 2012 and was also treated for infection some time ago.
“I have been unwell for a few days and need to undergo surgery. The doctors are working out the details,” Dikshit told TOI.
While Delhi legislators can get treatment at private medical facilities at the state’s expense, sources said rules are silent on their requests for treatment abroad. The only Delhi legislator who has so far got treatment in a foreign hospital was former Delhi Congress chief Ram Babu Sharma.
“Keeping political differences aside, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has asked officials to expedite Mrs Dikshit’s application within the timeframe. A team of four officials, including DGHS director general, principal of University College of Medical Sciences, dean of Maulana Azad Medical College and special secretary of the department of health and family welfare has been formed to revalidate her documents,” said an official requesting anonymity.
