North and South civic bodies issue notices to 35 farmhouses, 22 motels for illegal constructions
THE MOVE COMES 15 DAYS AFTER MEMBERS OF THE SC COMMITTEE VISITED MOTELS AND FARMHOUSES IN OUTER DELHI AND FOUND VIOLATION OF BUILDING NORMS
NEW DELHI: By next week, civic agencies may initiate sealing action against farmhouses and motels that have been found to be violating building bylaws.
VIPIN KUMAR/HT PHOTOA drive was recently carried out in Asola where some farmhouses on forest land were sealed and demolished.Till Thursday, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) had issued notices to at least 35 farmhouses across Chattarpur, Rangpuri, National Highway-8, Dwarka as well as areas in north Delhi for illegal construction and misuse.
Besides, notices have been served to 22 motels over the last one week, a municipal corporation official. The authorities have, in their notices, sought a reply or clarification pertaining to the violations within 48 hours.
“These farmhouses and motel owners will need to submit their explanations this week. Based on their replies, the department will revisit the properties. Sealing action against violators is likely to start from next week,” said a member of Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee member, privy to the development.
The move comes 15 days after the committee members visited motels and farmhouses in outer Delhi and found violation in the form of unauthorised constructions such as air conditioned pandals, shamiyanas and sheds inside the premises.
The committee found that no permission was taken from the respective municipal corporations to build these structures.
“There was illegal construction and misuse of properties by owners and occupiers of these motels and farmhouses. They have been holding functions at their premises without taking permission from the fire department,” a monitoring committee member said, on condition of anonymity.
The committee had directed civic bodies to seal such premises after issuing them notices, wherein they are given 48-hour deadline to reply.
“On the committee’s direction, we initiated inspection of these farmhouses and motels. Till now, 16 farmhouses in the Najafgarh Zone that comprises areas such as Mahipalpur, Rangpuri and Dwarka and 13 in the south zone that comprises areas such as Chhatarpur and NH-8 have been served notices,” a senior SDMC official said.
The municipal corporation officials are taking action against properties, which have no sanction plan, building completion or no-objection certificates from the fire department.
“In north Delhi, we have served notices to 22 of 31 motels that were found to be violating building norms. The survey of the 39 farmhouses is going on. However, five of them have already been served notices,” a north corporation official said.
The civic bodies had started the sealing drive in December last year on the direction of the monitoring committee. Since then, over 6,000 properties, including restaurants, shops and farmhouses have been targeted for violating norms.
DRIVE AGAINST ILLEGAL MEAT SHOPS
Meanwhile, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has intensified its drive against illegal meat shops and dairies operating out of residential areas. Between April this year and last month, the civic agency has sealed 83 illegal meat shops and 24 dairies.
“We have also lodged complaints against some errant shopkeepers, who were found to have broken the seal in the local police stations. We would appreciate if timely action is taken against them so that others don’t get instigated to break the seals at their shops,” an EDMC official said.
