New Delhi:A fierce encounter was witnessed in a crowded market in east Delhi between two snatchers on a bike and a cop on Wednesday afternoon. The shootout occurred after the policeman spotted the suspicious activities of the criminals. In a bid to escape, the snatchers fired two rounds at the cop, but he escaped narrowly. In retaliation, the cop shot one of them in the hand and legs and pinned him to the ground. The other managed to escape by mixing with the crowd. The dramatic sequence was caught by a CCTV camera installed at a nearby shop. Footage shows the cop fighting the criminals and dodging bullets.
The snatcher who was shot, identified as one Monu from Ghaziabad, is out of danger despite three bullet injuries. He has been involved in over a dozen cases of violent snatchings in the recent past.
Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik termed the act by the beat officer as “extremely commendable” and said he will be rewarded.
Around 1pm, when constable Vivek was patrolling a market in Vishwas Nagar on his twowheeler, he spotted two men riding a bike in a suspicious manner near a colony gate. He chased and blocked their way with his vehicle and asked them to stand back for checking.
“The men turned violent and tried to scare off the cop as he was alone. They tried to reverse their bike and flee. One of them then whipped out a pistol and shot at Vivek, who ducked for cover and the bullet flew past him,” said joint commissioner (crime) Ravindra Yadav.
Vivek then dropped his scooter in front of them and fired at one of the snatchers. As soon as the criminal fell on the ground, the cop pounced on him. The other man, wearing a turban, fled into a narrow bylane and mixed with the crowd.
Soon, reinforcement arrived and Monu was rushed to hospital. Even the cop was medically examined. “We have registered an FIR and three teams led by ACP Bharat Reddy have been formed to arrest the absconding snatcher identified as Amit alias Mangal, a resident of Asmoli in UP,” Yadav said.
